Pre-anesthetic Bloodwork

To ensure your pet can properly process and eliminate the anesthesia, we highly recommend that your pet have pre-anesthetic blood testing performed prior to any anesthetic procedure. You never know if your otherwise healthy pet may have an unknown condition that prevents their blood from clotting, a heart issue, or some other disorder that increases the risk of complications from anesthesia and surgery. Abnormal bloodwork does not necessarily mean that your pet cannot have their procedure; it may mean we need to use a different drug that better fits your pet’s needs. Older pets are more likely to have organ problems.

Bloodwork is required for all patients over 8 years of age.

E-collars

Here at Texas West Animal Health, we do everything to make your pet as comfortable as possible after surgery. We believe in pain control above and beyond what is standard.

Pre-Op: All pets receive a 24-hour pain medication injection

Intra-Op: They may receive a local anesthetic depending on the procedure

Post-Op: They receive cold laser therapy for pain and inflammation

We also bury our sutures, so there is nothing for your pet to pull out. That being said, pets will be pets, and despite all these precautions, some will still lick and chew at their incision sites. We offer e-collars as a barrier method to help prevent this. Collars range from $9–$26, depending on size.

Medical / Surgical Consent

I hereby authorize Texas West Animal Health to perform surgery on my pet. I understand that some risks always exist with anesthesia and/or surgery, and I have been encouraged to discuss any concerns I may have about those risks with my veterinarian before the procedure(s) is/are initiated. Full surgical monitoring is placed on each and every patient, along with an intravenous catheter and fluids during the procedure. Surgical and anesthetic risks include, but are not limited to, infection at the surgical site, unexpected blood loss, and anesthetic or surgical complications up to and including death. Additionally, I hereby authorize Texas West Animal Health to perform any diagnostic, treatment, or surgical procedures, as deemed necessary for medical or surgical complications or otherwise unforeseen circumstances. I understand that laser therapy is considered an alternative or adjunct therapy in veterinary medicine and is used to support pain management, inflammation reduction, and tissue healing, and I consent to its use as part of my pet’s treatment plan.

If my pet is pregnant, I understand the pregnancy will be terminated, and additional charges will be incurred. If my pet has fleas, they will be treated at the owner’s expense.

While Texas West Animal Health provides the highest quality of anesthesia monitoring and surgical services, I understand that there are rare complications associated with any anesthetic or surgical procedure. I fully understand these risks and understand that the veterinarians and staff will try to minimize these risks. I agree not to hold Texas West Animal Health, the veterinarians, or any staff member liable for any complications that may arise.
